Platinum occurs naturally in the alluvial sands of various rivers, though there is little evidence of its use by ancient peoples. However, the metal was used by pre-Columbian Americans near modern-day Esmeraldas, Ecuador to produce artifacts of a white gold-platinum alloy. The first European reference to platinum appears in 1557 in the writings of the Italian humanist Julius Caesar Scaliger as a description of an unknown noble metal found between Darien and Mexico, which no fire nor any Spanish artifice has yet been able to liquefy. The alchemical symbol for platinum (shown above) was made by joining the symbols of silver and gold.

In 1741, Charles Wood, a British metallurgist, found various samples of Columbian platinum in Jamaica, which he sent to William Brownring for further investigation. Antonio Ulloa, also credited with the discovery of platinum, returned to Spain from the French Geodesic Mission in 1746 after having been there for eight years. His historical account of the expedition included a description of platinum as being neither separable nor calcinable. Ulloa also anticipated the discovery of platinum mines. After publishing the report in 1748, Ulloa did not continue to investigate the new metal. In 1758, he was sent to superintend mercury mining operations in Huancavelica.

In the United States, Tiffany & Co. is also working to support reform of the General Mining Law of 1872 and to pass legislation to assist in cleaning up abandoned hardrock mines.

They agree with many in the enviromental community, the mining industry and Congress that an overhaul of federal mining law is long overdue. Tiffany also understands that achieving mining law reform will require hard work, negotiation, compromise and creativity in a public, transparent process.

They believe that mining on the public lands should be a privilege and must be carefully measured against alternative uses, including recreation and conservation. Most importantly, they also recognize that some public lands are simply not suitable for mining, and that their value for recreation and conservation is far greater than their value as s source of materials.

Tiffany strives to source gemstones and precious metals used in their jewelery from mines that operate at the highest standards pf social and environment responsibility. Given the enormity of their operations, they are most concerned about the impact of industrial-scal mining activities.

Tiffany firmly believes: New mince of development should not occur in areas of high ecological or cultureal value. Air, water and soil contamination should be prevented. The principle of informed community participation in mine development should be embraced. Workers’ rights, labor standards and human rights should be respected by all parties. Mine operators should provided for a appropriate and fiscally sound financial guarantees to cover the costs of mine closure, cleanup and restoration. Mine wastes should not be placed in rivers, streams, lakes or ocean waters.
