Tiffany blue box

Tiffany’s Blue Book catalogue is first published in 1845 and featuring the jeweler’s best and brightest, acquired its first cover in the particular shade of blue. And now is known as Tiffany Blue®. The famous blue, variously described as forget-me-not blue and robin’s egg blue, may have been chosen because of the popularity of the turquoise gemstone in 19th century jewelry. Turquoise was also a favorite of Victorian brides who gave their attendants a dove-shaped brooch set with turquoise so that they would not forget the bride.

The color was adopted for use on Tiffany boxes and shopping bags, as well as in advertising and other promotional materials. No longer merely a color, the shade has made the Tiffany Blue Box® an international icon signifying the excellence of all Tiffany & Co. designs.

True to the vision of Charles Tiffany, the Tiffany Blue Box® became an international symbol of style and sophistication. In 1906, The New York Sun reported. Tiffany has one thing in stock that you cannot buy of him for as much money as you may offer; he will only give it to you. And that is one of his boxes. The rule of the establishment is ironclad, never to allow a box bearing the name of the firm, to be taken out of the building except with an article which has been sold by them and for which they are responsible. Glimpsed on a busy street or resting in the palm of a hand, Tiffany Blue® boxes and shopping bags epitomize the jeweler’s great heritage of elegance, exclusivity and flawless craftsmanship.

TIFFANY & CO., TIFFANY, the color TIFFANY BLUE and the TIFFANY BLUE BOX  are trademarks of Tiffany and Company.

jean-schlumbergerJean Schlumberger was a French jewelry designer especially well-known for his work at Tiffany & Co. He was born in Mulhouse, France a well-to-do family involved in textile manufacturing. He sketched constantly during his youth, but his parents tried to discourage his artistic interest by refusing to allow him to undertake formal training. Schlumberger began his career creating buttons for Elsa Schiapearlli in the 1930s. Schiaparelli later commissioned him to design costume jewelry for her firm. During Word II, Schlumberger was in the French Army and survived Dunkirk. He also served under General Charles de Gaulle in England and the Middle East with the Free French Forces. After the war, Schlumberger came to New York and began to design clothing for Chez Ninon. In 1946, he opened a jewelry salon with partner Nicolas Bongard (1908-2000).

In 1956, the president of Tiffany & Co., Walter Hoving, asked Schlumberger to begin designing for the firm. He had his own workshop at the company until his retirement in the late 1970s and was eventually made a Vice-President.Schlumberger’s designs at Tiffany & Co. were remarkable for their whimsical interpretations of natural forms. He was especially inspired by sea creatures and other animals. Diana Vreeland wrote that Schlumberger “appreciates the miracle of jewels.

One of the most famous pieces that Schlumberger created was the mounting for the famed Tiffany Diamond, which was in the firm’s collection since the nineteenth century. The brooch, entitled “Bird on a Rock”, incorporates the impressive 128.54 carats (25.71 g) yellow diamond in a fanciful setting typical of Schlumberger’s style.

Since 1837, Tiffany & Co. has looked first to the beauty of the natural world for fifth-avenue-shopdesign inspiration. They have also looked to the bounty of that world for the precious materials that give form and life to their designs. This influence can be seen in many of their most memorable creations, from Jean Schlumberger’s fantastical use of flowers and exotic birds to Elsa Peretti’s stylized renderings of starfish, beans and apples.

Not surprisingly, Tiffany views the protection of the places and communities from which their precious materials come as both a moral obligation and a business imperative. Their goal is “sustainable style”, enduring designs that embody their unique aesthetic while upholding their commmitment to pritect the natural world and to responsibly use the resources it provides. All of their strakeholders and, most importantly, theircustomers, expect and deserve nothing less.

While they are proud of the results they have achieved, they recognize that there is much more to be done. They want to share with erevyone their accomplishments, their continuing challenges, their agenda for change, and keep everyone informed of their progress.

In 1940, Tiffany & Co. moved to its current location at 727 Fifth Avenue, at the corner of Fifth-seven Street. The granite and limestone building, with Art Deco influences and stainless steel doors, is adorned with a nine-foot bronzed figure of Atlas shouldering a clock.

charles Lewis Tiffany

Charles Lewis Tiffany, who is the founder of Tiffany & Co., one of the most wellknown and prestigious sellers of high quality jewelry, silverware and other products for the home. As a leader of jewelry trade in the 19th century in American, he created the country’s first retail catalog, and, in 1851, he introduced the English standard of sterling silver.

He was born in Killingly, Connecticut February 15, 1812. When he was 15 years old , he worked as a clerk in his father’s store. In the year of 1837, Charles Lewis Tiffany and his schoolmate John Young opened a stationery store in New York City, and before too long they added jewelry and silverware to their inventory. Their company began to manufacture its own jewelry in 1848 and opened a store in Pairs in a short period later.

While the first day of business just brought a mere 4 dollars and 98 cents, the world of jewelry and luxury goods would never again be the same. But when the store obtained some of the French crown jeweles in 1887, Tiffany’s fame spread all over the world. His tireless search for one-of-a-kind objects charmed and fascinated the weathy of New York. And his obsession with the simple elegance of classic silver design earned Tiffany & Co. the highly coverted Award of Merit at the Pairs Exposition Universelle in 1867. This was the first time an American company had been recognized by a European jury.

Under the leadership of Charles Lewis Tiffany, there are many indicidual achievements. But the introduction of celebrated engagement ring in the 6-prong Tiffany® Setting is one of the most noteworthy. But, of course, Charles Lewis Tiffany’s greatest accomplishment was to establish American’s preeminent house of design and the world’s premier jewelry.
