Tiffany’s passion for “sustainable style” extends beyond the precious gemstones and metals that grace their creations. It is a way of doing business that finds expression in a range of initiative – from the standards they sets for their business partners, to the paper they use, to their energy conservation efforts.

Tiffany’s own facilities – spanning diamond cutting and polishing, jewelry crafting and distribution – are operated at the highest standards in the industry. No less rigorous are the standards they use to evaluate their vendors and suppliers. They have established a multidimensional Social Accountability Program that incldues comprehensive guidelines for the manufacture of the materials they use, all designed to ensure that their vendors and suppliers are held to the same exacting standards that thay are proud to uphold.

Corals, although often mistaken for plants or rocks, are living animals and are among the most critically important creatures in the sea. Together with the associated reef system which they help create, orals provide marine life with food, fertile frounds for reproduction and safe havens from predators.

Today, corals are in crisis – the result of destructive fishing methods, climate change, pollution and their removal for use as decorative home objects in aquariums and jewelry.

Recognizing that there is no sustainable way to harvest corals without damaging critical marine ecosystems, Tiffany has refused to use ral corals in their collections since 2002. They urge other users of coral to join them in a formal “No Coral Sales” policy.

An estimated 90 percent of the world’s rubies originate in Myanmar(formerly known as Burma). The Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act of 2003 outlawed the importation to the U.S. of gemstons from that nation due to its human rights vuolations. Many jewelers exploited a loophole in the law by purchasing rubies mined in Myanmar but cut and polished in other countries. Tiffany & Co., however, stopped buying rubies, jade and spinel originating in Myanmar. In July of 2008, the President signed legislation banning the importation of gemstones from Myanmar into the U.S. (the Tom Lantos Block Burmese JADE ACT of 2008). This stricter law closes the loophole created by the earlier act. Tiffany salutes this embargo. This sanction is an important step by tiffany-apple-accerssory1the U.S. to help secure basic freedom for the Burmese people.

If reforms are to succeed, we believe taxpayers must be fairly compensated for minerals taken form public lands, that protection of the envirnoment must be enhanced and that business certainty for companies and communities dependent on mining must be improved.

The toxic legacy of abandoned mines in the American West is also a matter of great concern to Tiffany. Under current law, government enities, ninprofits, private parties and other organizations may incur liability for voluntarily cleaning up mine-related pollution that did not cause. Tiffany supports protection of these “Good Samaritans” to encourage efforts to effectively deal with these mines and to establish a permanent source of funding for them.

In the United States, Tiffany & Co. is also working to support reform of the General Mining Law of 1872 and to pass legislation to assist in cleaning up abandoned hardrock mines.

They agree with many in the enviromental community, the mining industry and Congress that an overhaul of federal mining law is long overdue. Tiffany also understands that achieving mining law reform will require hard work, negotiation, compromise and creativity in a public, transparent process.

They believe that mining on the public lands should be a privilege and must be carefully measured against alternative uses, including recreation and conservation. Most importantly, they also recognize that some public lands are simply not suitable for mining, and that their value for recreation and conservation is far greater than their value as s source of materials.

In keeping with their desire to encourage ethical business conduct throughout the jewelry industry, in 2005 Tiffany & Co. was a founding member of the Council for Responsible Jewellery Practices (CRIP). Concerned with the entire supply chain-from mining through manufacturing to the retail showcase-CRIP has developed Principles and the Code of Practices to which all members must adhere. Tiffany fully subscribles to the Principles and the Code of Practices and will remain strongly committed to this vital initiative.

Tiffany is also supporting the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance(IRMA). The group includes participants from three broad sectors: mining, nongovernmental organizations and retail, with additional respresentation from labor groups and communities impacted by mining. They are hopeful that by working collaboratively, this diverse group of stakeholders can clearly define best mining practices as the critically important first step toward building a responsible mining framework.

Tiffany has collaborated with other forwards-looking leaders in the jewelry industry and with nongovernmental organizations in order to maximize our influence throughout the supply chain. To encourage safe and environmentally responsible mining practices, Tiffany has taken a leading role in working closely with producers and end users of precious metals, jewelry industry groups and interested nongovernmental organizations, including Earthworks and Oxfam.

In 2003, Tiffany was one of several organizations that convened a conference on responsible mining, which was attended by nongovernmental organizations, retails, investors, insurers and technical experts seeking to identify best practices. The resulting dialogue led to the publication of the Framework for Responsible Mining: A Guid to Evolvig Standards, with the goal of advancing productive debate and, ultimately, action by governments, retails, civil society, the mining industry and others,

Tiffany was the first jeweler to embrace the objectives of the No Dirty Gold campaign, which established aspirational standards for the extraction of gold that retail jewelers can use as they seek responsible mning sources.

There is no shape more complete, more eternal, than a circle. Pendant in sterling silver, hand-carved black jade and green aventurine is so chaiming. On a 16” Peretti chain in sterlingsilver. Originak designs copyrighted by Elsa Peretti. It’s $420.

A highly sought after variety of gem garnet is the fine green Grossular garnet from Kenya and Tanzania called tsavorite. This garnet was discovered in the 1960s in the Tsavo area of Kenya, from which the gem takes its name.

Viluite is a variety name of grossular, that is not a recognized mineral species. It is usually olive green though sometimes brownish or reddish, brought about by impurities in the crystal. Viluite is found associated with and is similar in appearance to vesuvianite, and there is confusion in terminology as viluite has long been used as a synonym for wiluite, a sorosilicate of the vesuvianite group. This confusion in nomenclature dates back to James Dwight Dana. It comes from the Vilyuy river area in Siberia.

Grossular is known by many other names, and also some misnomers; colophonite - coarse granules of garnet, ernite, gooseberry-garnet - light green colored and translucent,  kalkthongranat, kanelstein, olyntholite/olytholite, pechgranat, romanzovite, and tellemarkite. Misnomers include; South African jade, garnet jade, Transvaal jade, and African jade.
