Charles Lewis Tiffany, who is the founder of Tiffany & Co., one of the most wellknown and prestigious sellers of high quality jewelry, silverware and other products for the home. As a leader of jewelry trade in the 19th century in American, he created the country’s first retail catalog, and, in 1851, he introduced the English standard of sterling silver.

 

He was born in Killingly, Connecticut February 15, 1812. When he was 15 years old , he worked as a clerk in his father’s store. In the year of 1837, Charles Lewis Tiffany and his schoolmate John Young opened a stationery store in New York City, and before too long they added jewelry and silverware to their inventory. Their company began to manufacture its own jewelry in 1848 and opened a store in Pairs in a short period later.

 

While the first day of business just brought a mere 4 dollars and 98 cents, the world of jewelry and luxury goods would never again be the same. But when the store obtained some of the French crown jeweles in 1887, Tiffany’s fame spread all over the world. His tireless search for one-of-a-kind objects charmed and fascinated the weathy of New York. And his obsession with the simple elegance of classic silver design earned Tiffany & Co. the highly coverted Award of Merit at the Pairs Exposition Universelle in 1867. This was the first time an American company had been recognized by a European jury.

 

Under the leadership of Charles Lewis Tiffany, there are many indicidual achievements. But the introduction of celebrated engagement ring in the 6-prong Tiffany® Setting is one of the most noteworthy. But, of course, Charles Lewis Tiffany’s greatest accomplishment was to establish American’s preeminent house of design and the world’s premier jewelry.

 

Charles Lewis Tiffany, on of the most famous jewelry designer, the founder of Tiffany & Co. died on Fevruary 18, 1902, in New York.
